From French, “a remembrance or memory”

“memento”
“keepsake”
“token of remembrance”

Souvenirs are usually mass- produced merchandise associated with a location or specific sightseeing, often denounced as “kitsch”, with lack of design. But as Donald A. Norman writes, 'Surface appearance and behavioural utility play relatively minor roles. Instead, what matters is the history of interaction, the associations that people have with the objects, and the memories they evoke.' (Emotional Design, p.46)

The Souvenir solidifies and materializes owner’s personal experience. Having a psychological connection with the possessor as a symbol of past experience, it means different to each owner, being universal and atemporal. 'The objects in our lives are more than mere possessions (…) always have a story, a remembrance, and something that ties us personally to this particular object, this particular thing.' (Emotional Design, p.6)

But human’s memory have limited capacity and duration, which means that information is not retained indefinitely. The Souvenir is a soap bar that disappears with its use as memories does.

Light is earth’s principal source of natural energy from which all life stems. It is also an important factor on human life. There is a clear scientific evidence that light profoundly affects the psychology; spirit, emotions and the mood. Higher levels of lighting generally produce cheerful effects whereas lower levels tend to create an atmosphere of relaxation. On design, it is not only used for visual comfort, but also to achieve predetermined emotional responses. Light has a crucial effect on any room and its atmospheres.

This lamp is based on a tumbler doll which, due to a weight system, rocks on its base and always comes back to its initial position. Moreover, a four-meter cable coils round the lamp being able to used it as an extension cord to be plugged anywhere. Pulling it out, the lamp rocks but it can never be knocked over. For users comfort, it has a top handle to be carried.

This ambient light has been designed to be placed on the floor, creating a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

exhibition, what is design

Final exhibition that represents the culmination of a project where we were posed the question "what is design?" in Kingston University.

Working in a multidisciplinary team which crossed courses and cultures, we embodied our position through a powerful video footage. The video shows demonstrations and the authority’s response in our home countries.

MANIFESTO
Design: A political act.

Coming from different countries and different struggles, we all experienced from within that design is a political act.
It can influence thinking, often inspiring people to act against oppression and injustice.
Each of the below statements comes from a different member of our group, and explains our collective individual experiences;

‘I come from a country where I have to act as a silent designer to stay a designer.’

‘I originate from the country that gave birth to Democracy. Since the crisis arrived, the protests, the austerity measures and the absurd seem endless. Activist design such as graffiti is helping people awaken and take a deeper look in their lives and what’s going on around them.’

‘Any sign of oppression intensifies people’s creativity to fight for their rights.’

‘Imagine that there are governments that torture and kill children for spray-painting the word ‘freedom’ on a wall.

'My country’s designers see it as their responsibility to reveal these shocking truths to the world and to inspire people to fight oppression.’

‘My country suffered twenty five years of civil war and designers are still trying to unite its people.’

‘In posting satirical designs on the Internet, designers are trying to communicate the situation to the world to change their government, which they feel never listens to the people’s voices.’

‘You may control my action, but can you control my thinking?’

Thus, we strongly believe that as designers it is our responsibly to listen, think, feel, and design.

VA is a turning ceramic vase with an opened top and bottom. Its interior is divided into two parts with different depths, so you can have two vases in one.

Flowers last longer when their stems are cut. However, when it get shorter does not look as nice as it did in the same vase. You do not need to get a new one, just turn it over and use the shorter part.

Pottery techniques haven’t evolved much for thousand years. Ceramists are still using the same methods as ancients artistes did. Once on the wheel, you realize why modeling the clay is such a magic moment. You feel the power to create from scratch with your own hands. The results are as exciting as the design process itself. Even with the maximum accuracy employed, each piece is a unique and unrepeatable craft. The following turning models are based on people’s habits and behaviour.

This dinner plate has been specially designed for food served with sauces. It shape evokes the habit of dipping bread into it and emphasizes the pleasure it produces.

Active furniture is a collection of three objects which try to keep users physically active by creating new relationships object-user-user-object. These new relationships are not unidirectional anymore – relationships in which users are the ones who demand from the object and the object obeys.
The pieces of furniture in this collection do anything but facilitate what users want. They force users to perform a physical action in order to make them function. These actions keep users active. Trying to find a way around the system also implies an effort. In this case, however, it implies a physiological effort.

This working desk has the drawers opposite to the users. Every time users need to access the drawers, they are forced to stand up and walk to get what they need from the drawers.

Placed several meters above the floor, this hanger transforms the wall in a little mountain that needs to be climbed every time users have to get their jacket.

This lamp always needs someone holding it. If it is in a vertical position, the bulb switches on, whereas in a horizontal position it switches off. It forces users to perform a little but constant effort, which does not let them to relax completely.
